TANZANIA'S DEEP SOUTH - RUAHA, SELOUS & ZANZIBAR
a safari with Daryl Balfour/Pierre Burton
Dates on request
A river-side room with deck at Amara Selous
Join us on this special new Wildphotos Safari to southern Tanzania's spectacular Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve, as well as the exotic & iconic "spice island" of Zanzibar for a complete change of pace in the ancient architectural treasure of Stone Town.
We have secured dates at perhaps the best time of year for the Selous, Africa's largest & probably least tamed game reserve and an area that has a growing reputation for spectacular wild dog sightings.
This safari starts in the coastal city of Dar es Salaam with a night in the luxurious Serena Dar Hotel after your long flight to Tanzania. The next morning after an early breakfast we transfer to the domestic airport for the scheduled flight to Ruaha in the southwest of the country. We spend three nights in the rustic Kigelia tented camp (or similar), situated under shady sausage trees (Kigelia africana).
Our days in Ruaha are spent exploring this, one of Africa's most rugged and scenic national parks. The landscape encompasses the Ruaha River along with rolling hills, rocky outcrops and some spectacular baobab trees - which have been known to harbour leopards among their branches! One of the classic images of Africa if you are lucky to see it.

Both Ruaha & the Selous are known for their elephants
Ruaha is renowned for its wildlife, and all the predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog are there in abundance, while its elephant population is also spectacular. This is one of the lesser-known parks of Africa and is off the well-trodden tourist track. It is often possible to spend an entire game drive without seeing another vehicle.
After three nights in Ruaha we join our flight to Selous Game Reserve, possibly the last truly wild reserve in this part of Africa. We spend four nights in the luxury Amara Selous Safari Camp (or similar, according to availability) and have timed our visit to have the best chance of spending time with the area's growing number of African wild dogs.
Our days here will be spent exploring this truly enormous park, either returning to camp for lunch or taking a picnic and spending the entire day exploring. Apart from its landscapes Selous is also renowned for its rivers and we will spend time exploring the waterways and even trying our hands at fishing for anyone interested! Selous is noted for all the major predators too and apart from wild dogs we will hope to track lions, leopards and cheetahs as well.
Accommodation is luxurious, and we will spend a sumptuous three days enjoying the comforts as much as the wildlife of the area .
Of interest to wild dog enthusiasts is that this safari ends immediately before the start of my annual trip to the wild dog dens of northern Botswana, and I will be travelling directly from Tanzania to Botswana for this next safari - you can join me in two iconic wild dog areas!

After three nights at Amara we say farewell and take an afternoon flight east, over the Indian Ocean off Dar es Salaam to the spectacular Spice Island of Zanzibar for a special cultural experience. Zanzibar is one of the most exotic destinations of the world and we will spend three nights in a small and exclusive boutique hotel in the heart of Stone Town. Stone Town is a photographic marvel, with narrow side streets, colourful fabrics, ancient architecture, carved doorways and photogenic people. Its shops and bazaars are a shopper's delight and its cuisine, as the seat of the ancient spice trade to the West, is an epicurean sensation. Accommodation will be in Kisiwa House [bedroom, below] and I have chosen to spend all our time in Stone Town rather than at one of the beach resorts for which the island is also rightly famous.
We will have two full days in Stone Town to explore its twisting alleys and markets, and we will concentrate on the cultural aspect of Zanzibar in our outings and photography. Our accommodation here is on a Bed & Breakfast basis only, allowing us to explore and sample the wonderful food available on the island during the days and evenings. Zanzibar is a culinary hot spot!
The safari ends with a return flight to Dar es Salaam in time for outgoing international connections.
The safari is fully inclusive of all accommodation, park fees, internal flights in Tanzania, meals and drinks in the safari camps in Ruaha and Selous and transfers, as well as the night of July 15th in the Serena Hotel in Dar on a bed & breakfast basis. Lunch and dinners in Zanzibar will be for your own account .
The cost of this safari, from Dar es Salaam, is ENQUIRE per person sharing, and ENQUIRE per single. The safari is dependent upon four guests booking, though more than this number can be accommodated. Contact us NOW if you are interested.
